Air Pollution Is A Costly Environmental Problem - 878 Words

Air pollution has become very costly environmental problem in terms of both human lives and in terms of billions of dollars lost for health-care expenditure and crop damage. Contact the pollution control authorities in your community for the levels or air pollutants. Identify main air pollutants and the possible causes of air pollution. How does your community compare to others? Discuss your findings. The main two air pollutants in air above SanDiego, CA seems to be comprised of Ozone (O3) and Particulate Matter (PM2.5). PM2.5 refers to ground-level paticulate smaller than 2.5 mircos. Ozone which occures at or near ground level is introduced to the air we breathe through a chemical reaction. This reaction occurrence happens when nitrogen dioxcide mixes with volatile oganic compounds with the help of sunlight. The brown haze seen over cities on cold mornings is primarily due to NO2. Ground level ozone is a main contributor of upper respatory distress symtoms and other health related ailments. Ground ozone can have negative effects on food crops which inadverntly causes a rise in the cost of food which affect everyone. (Ground Level Ozone, 2015) The second main pollutant found floating in the California air would be Particulate Matter 2.5.
